To answer the question “How many people are arrested and prosecuted in NYC each year?” and to explore more about the population, data was compiled about the people who were arrested and prosecuted in NYC over a five-year period. A Prosecuted Arrest occurs when a person is arrested for a misdemeanor or felony, the arrest charges are screened by a prosecutor, and a prosecutor decides to file at least one charge with the court that stemmed from the arrest. A Prosecuted Arrest results in a single court case. Court data was used to identify the people who had a Prosecuted Arrest and to compile information about both the people and the resulting cases.
The data are grouped by the year of the arrest (2018-2022). Each person with at least one Prosecuted Arrest in a year, identified by the presence of a court case, is included once in that year. A person is included in each year they had at least one Prosecuted Arrest, meaning that a person can be included in more than one year. For each person arrested and prosecuted, the Number of Prosecuted Arrests is reported.

This view is through the lens of the Number of Prosecuted Arrests. The Case Characteristics view displays summary data about each person’s case(s) including the Most Serious Charge, Most Frequent Most Serious Charge, Bail Set or Remanded to Jail, or Released to Supervised Release, and can be filtered by the Number of Prosecuted Arrests.
